Disc 1 en 2 bevatten de extra lange widescreen versie van de film: bijna 50 minuten aan nieuwe scènes zijn toegevoegd door regisseur Peter Jackson inclusief de confrontatie tussen Gandalf en Saruman bij de ruïnes van Isengard. Scènes die ook alléén op de extended versie te zien zijn omvatten een liefdesscène tussen Faramir en Éowyn, de cameo van regisseur Peter Jackson en een confrontatie tussen Aragorn en The Mouth of Sauron (Sauron's dienaar). Tevens zijn er veel extra's toegevoegd, zoals commentaar-tracks van onder andere regisseurs en schrijvers, de cast en het design team.
